In order to get into a magnet school, you must apply using the Choices application that comes out in the fall each year. The application process is simple – all you have to do is fill out the form. LAUSD prefers that you fill out the application online. The application will not be mailed to your home.
If you prefer, you can pick up forms at your local LAUSD school, LAUSD offices, and Los Angeles Public Libraries. If you’re picking up a form, try to do so shortly after the brochure is published as facilities do run out of them.
You can now apply to three magnet schools each year. However, you can apply to only one school if you choose. If you do apply to more than one school, note that if your child does not get into your first choice school, and you’ve listed a second school, your child will not be placed on the wait list for the first school. The same applies if your child does not get into your second choice school, and you’ve listed a third. (I’m not sure which school your child is wait-listed for if he or she does not get into any of the choices you’ve listed, and hopefully that’s unlikely to happen.) Acceptance into a magnet school depends on wait list points, race, and lottery.
