During the school year, my kids eat two meals per day at school. That’s 10 meals per week away from home. And while many kids obtain their food at school, mine prefer to bring food from home. But it’s not always easy packing healthy foods that they’ll eat.
A relatively recent discovery for me, within the last one to two years, has been single-serve milk cartons. I always serve my kids organic milk, and there are organic single serve milk cartons that come in kid-friendly flavors like strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate. You can also get plain milk in single serve cartons, but my children tell me the single serve plain milk tastes funny. They like the strawberry and vanilla just fine, though.
The calorie and sugar count for flavored milk isn’t that much more than a juice box, and it’s actually less if your child will drink plain milk. Plus, when kids drink milk, they get calcium, vitamin D, and protein. And they don’t get the high fructose corn syrup and artificial preservatives often found in juice boxes. So when the folks at Horizon asked me to take the Healthy Lunch Challenge and swap out a juice box for a single serve carton of Horizon milk in my kids’ lunches, I was happy to say yes. My kids were happy too!
Horizon has also put together “Talking Foods” videos featuring “tasty characters” sharing the nutritional benefits of milk boxes over juice boxes. And, they’re giving away coupons and gift cards in their Lunch Box of the Week photo contest.
Horizon is challenging CFO readers to take the Healthy Lunch Challenge too, and they’re giving one lucky CFO reader a Horizon Organic branded lunch box and plus coupons for FREE shelf-stable Horizon Organic milk boxes to try the swap for a week.
