  • Introducing my new site: LAUSD Magnet Schools & Beyond

I’m working on multiple projects, and one of them just launched – LAUSD Magnet Schools & Beyond, a blog about – you guessed it – magnet schools and other options within the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Longtime readers might recall that I’ve been researching magnet schools for years. I’ve discovered in the last year that I’ve learned a lot more about the process than most other parents know, because the information simply isn’t that accessible and you have to dig for it. I don’t know why that is, but I wanted to create a place where other parents can learn about how the magnet application process in particular works, and the site just kind of blossomed from there.

LAUSD Magnets will be less active than CFO, but I’ll keep it updated with important dates, and information about magnet schools and other LAUSD programs that might be of interest. You can already find information about how to apply to a magnet school and the magnet school priority points system.

You can also subscribe to LAUSD Magnets updates via RSS or email.

    1. Great site! I was in 2 LAUSD magnet schools (elementary and middle school) and this will definitely be a great resource for parents.

      Thanks, Briana!

Your new site is a GEM! THANK YOU! I'll be passing the info onto parents I know (I'm an LAUSD teacher), and keeping up with the site for my own kids as well. What do you think about the quality of the magnet schools? Our oldest daughter went to one this past year and we were very disappointed in the curriculum, accountability, communication with parents, and school safety.

    4. Chief Family Officer says:

@Lashalot – Glad you like it! As for magnet school quality, I think it really depends on the school – you have to research each school and choose one that seems like it will be a good fit for your child. The mere fact that a school is a magnet doesn't make it great, unfortunately. I'm sorry you were disappointed – I hear that even at gifted magnets, you have to supplement the curriculum at home as they are still on the narrow side, so to speak. I hope your next year is better!
