  • CVS Starter Transactions: 4/17 – 4/23/11

You’ll find a list of this week’s CVS deals here.

If you’re new to The Drugstore Game, these new starter transactions will help you get your feet wet and show you how The Drugstore Game can save you money on things you already buy. If you don’t understand the transactions, read my Drugstore Game Primer, Common Sense with Money’s FAQ (which has a handy explanation of acronyms), and my explanation of How to Play The Drugstore Game at CVS.

Be sure to sign up for a free CVS Extra Care card – you’ll need it for the following deals (get it in store instead of online so they give you the card right away).

It’s not a great week to start at CVS, but you can still get things you normally buy for less than you would at Target:

    Transaction #1:
Buy 1 Edge Infused Shave Gel, 7 oz – $3.29
Use $0.55/1 Edge Shave Gel 03/20/11 Smart Source Insert

    Pay: $2.74 + tax
    Receive: $3.20 ECB

    Transaction #2:
Buy 1 Cottonelle or Cottonelle Ultra Bathroom Tissue, 18 pk – $8.99
Use $0.50/1 Cottonelle Bathroom Tissue 03/13/11 SS Insert or
Use $0.50/1 Cottonelle Toilet Paper printable or printable
And use $3.20 ECB from previous transaction

    Pay: $5.29 + tax
    Receive: $2 ECB

Summary: Pay $8.03 + tax for one can of shave gel and 18 rolls of toilet paper, plus have $2 ECB to roll next week. If you’d rather, you can take the $2 ECB and spend it on good deals like Stove Top stuffing ($0.38 after coupon) and Nivea Men’s body wash ($0.88 after coupon), or go through Tuesday to pick up the Easter freebies.

The toilet paper works out to $0.36 per double roll (I’m assuming they’re double rolls, I can’t be 100% certain from the ad scan I’m using). By comparison, combining a sale and coupon at Target the week of 4/10 gets you $0.47/roll on Charmin. So get cheaper toilet paper by playing The Drugstore Game, plus other stuff 🙂

Thanks for the starter ideas. I can't wait to start, but we're moving (down to SD) in a couple months, so I'm waiting.

That being said, it looks like I'll have a choice of any of the three major drug store chains as all will be close to our new home. Is there one pharmacy you'd recommend as generally having better deals? Easier to play the game at? Thanks.

    2. Chief Family Officer says:

@Christine – I've always thought CVS was the easiest to master, but lately the best deals have been at Rite Aid and Walgreens. I actually haven't set foot in CVS in probably two months, and I'm only going this week for the free kid's toothbrushes!
