  • Midday Coffee: Baking supplies stockpile

$5 Dinners has a handy list of target prices for baking supplies, although I do think it’s a bit regional. For example, I haven’t been able to get free evaporated milk, because our sale prices here are 25 to 50 cents higher than I see listed for other parts of the country. But Erin points out that we’re coming up on the time of year when baking supplies hit their lowest sale prices, and I was thinking about stockpiling. Specifically, how much is too much? I’d really like to fill my cupboards with flour and brown sugar, which I seem to keep running out of, but I don’t have that much space. Maybe I’ll fill the extra fridge in the garage with flour, and cram my cabinets with brown sugar :)

Again for my friend K., who is still on the hunt for inexpensive thank-you gifts (she balked at paying $60+ to have flowers delivered): Groupon is still offering $40 worth of treats for $20 from Fairytale Brownies as a deal nearby in Dayton, and the Groupon can be used toward shipping, which is $6.95. This is an online deal that can be purchased by anyone regardless of location – just click on “Visit More Cities” at the top of the page to get the deal. You can also get a $10 credit when someone signs up for Groupon using your referral link and makes their first purchase (thank you if you join using my referral link!). Don’t forget to shop through Ebates to get back 6% of your purchase.

I saw Erin's post, and thought that too. I've never seen pumpkin for $1! It's $2.49 on sale at Ralphs (and I've never found a coupon) and $1.99 at Trader Joes. I live in Valencia, CA and think the prices here are much higher than what bloggers from the midwest report.

    2. Chief Family Officer says:

@Michelle – Sometimes it's hard for me to tell if target prices are on target for our area, because I buy so many organic and hormone-antibiotic-free (for example, her price on butter), so I'm glad you thought the same!

    3. I am in Southern CA and I found organic canned pumpkin at walgreens last year (after thanksgiving) for less then $1 so I bought what was left (I think about 8 cans). We still have a couple left so I am hoping I can find some more this year.

Also I freeze my brown sugar as well as my flour. It keeps it from drying out.

@Anon – Thanks for the tip about pumpkin, I'll have to keep an eye out for those. It's good to know that brown sugar can be frozen. I wish I had room in my freezer for the sugar and flour, but it's usually full of food! :)
