  • Yogurt Experiment

    I had some vanilla yogurt that expired a couple of days ago and no one wanted to eat it, so I decided to try an experiment: I put the yogurt into ice cube trays and froze it. I’ve frozen yogurt before, but I didn’t like the texture. So we won’t be defrosting and eating it.

    My plan is to use the frozen yogurt in smoothies, for some sweetness, tartness and thickness. I’ll let you know how that goes. Any predictions?

    1. You mentioned not liking the defrosted texture, but I wanted to suggest also that you can eat yogurt while it's still frozen. My kids love strawberry or peach yogurt popsicles made with those little kits. I also bought fun-shaped ice cube trays from Ikea and freeze fruit yogurt in shapes. I do the same thing with past-its-prime fruit, freezing it into popsicles or ice cubes. If you don't have any of those tools handy, you can freeze it flat in a plastic bag or tub, then break it into smaller pieces you can eat with your fingers or use in smoothies.

    2. I can't see why it wouldn't work just fine in smoothies. I always put yogurt (albeit not frozen) into our smoothies and they are always delish. I like the slight tang it adds to the flavor.

      @Candy – I agree, yogurt in smoothies is great. I'm hoping it will help with thickening, mine are always a little thinner than I would prefer.

    4. Mine used to be too thin until I started using only frozen fruit, with yogurt and a little juice added. Now I can make them so thick they are hard to even pour.

      Of course, I'd guess that a lot depends on your blender as well.
