  • Review & Giveaway: Pillsbury Reduced Sugar Sugar-Free Baking Products

I’ve got a couple of family members who watch their sugar intake pretty closely, so when Pillsbury asked if I wanted to try their new sugar-free products, I readily agreed. (I erred in the original version of this post and said it was the reduced-sugar. I sincerely apologize for the error. If you’ve already entered the giveaway, don’t worry – your entries will still be counted.)

You know what? The sugar-free products taste exactly the same as the regular thing. The batter, especially, is identical to the full-sugar thing (yes, I tried the uncooked batter – I can’t resist!). The final baked product had a slightly different texture – I thought the brownies were a little more chewy, and the cake was a little more crumbly. But the difference is so minor that if you didn’t know it was a sugar-free product, you would never notice. And the canned frosting was identical to the full-sugar product, at least as I recall (it’s been so long since I’ve had canned frosting, I might not be remembering exactly).

My only complaint about these products is the ingredients list. Partially hydrogenated oil is pretty high on the list of every product so I didn’t give any of my test items to the kids.

Also, I need to make an observation – as the box clearly states, these products are not low-calorie, they’re just sugar-free. So they’re not a “diet food,” so to speak. But say you want to make a birthday cake for someone who’s borderline diabetic – this is a great way to keep the sugar content of your baking down. Did I mention that the happy eaters won’t be able to tell that it’s sugar-free?

    Win it!
