Question: When I use a BOGO free coupon with two BOGO free items, do I pay tax?

I was just in Rite Aid for the FIRST TIME yesterday, too overwhelmed to do any SCR transactions because I'm already shopping at CVS and Wags and it's just too confusing, frankly. But I wanted to transfer prescriptions and get the $50 gift cards, so I went ahead and bought 8 Cover Girl products (I had 4 BOGO free coupons to go with their BOGO free sale) and 4 Trident Layers (I had 4 $.75 coupons to go with their BOGO free sale) along with some bottled water. The manager was called over, of course – everyone was really nervous, and they insisted I pay tax on all the items, so it was $14 for everything instead of the $4 I expected. I'm not complaining because it really is still such an amazing deal, I'm just asking.

    2. Chief Family Officer says:

@Anon – I think whether you have to pay tax on an item where you used a coupon varies by state, but I have always had to. Although I think the tax is applied only on the items you are paying for, not the ones that were free – so in your example, you probably paid tax on 4 of the CG and 2 of the Trident.
