Starting January 1, 2010, the income limits on Roth IRA conversions will be eliminated, meaning that anyone can convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, potentially avoiding future tax consequences. Five Cent Nickel mentioned an interesting loophole for those whose incomes make them ineligible for direct contribution to a Roth: make a non-deductible contribution to a traditional IRA, and then convert the traditional IRA. It’s something to think about if you’re currently ineligible for the Roth. (But consider this before making the decision to covert.)
