Starting next month, California is helping itself to an interest-free loan from workers by increasing the amount withheld in each paycheck. It's not too significant, since someone making $75,000 and filing a joint return will only lose $16 in their paycheck. But it does highlight the mess our state government is in.

I was at the grocery store yesterday and the man in front of me was telling the cashier that he had tried to stop in at Payless to get shoes but that it was completely mobbed. He couldn't figure out why! Now I know! :-)
