If you had infants in your household the last few years, chances are good you saw the boxes of Cheerios cereal that came with a paperback book. That’s certainly how I learned about the Cheerios Spoonfuls of Stories program, which has given away more than 35 million children’s books by distributing them free inside cereal boxes, and donated nearly $3 million to the non-profit organization First Book, which provides books to children from low-income families. I was buying Cheerios anyway, as finger food for the boys starting when they were eight months old, and figured I might as well get the free book. What’s been wonderful about the books is the quality of the stories – they’ve really been enjoyable, and introduced us to new favorites like Olivia.
This year, Spoonfuls of Stories is running their third New Author Contest as a way to encourage previously unpublished, up-and-coming children’s book authors and nurture a love of reading in children. Entries are being accepted through July 15, 2009 and will be judged on appropriate story and content for children ages 3-8, emotional connection, writing quality, uniqueness, and read-aloud potential. More details on the contest can be found at www.spoonfulsofstoriescontest.com.
Best of all, one lucky CFO reader will win a Spoonfuls of Stories gift set of four books, including the winner of the first New Author Contest, The Great Dog Wash.
