Walgreens: $5 off $20 purchase coupon + my plan

I mentioned earlier in the week that I forgot my last two-day only coupon when I went to Walgreens, so I am extremely thankful that I've been given a chance to make up for my mistake and pick up more free-after-rebate items at a discount. There's a new $5 off $20 purchase coupon and it's good today and Saturday only. The usual limitations apply. I've worked up a couple of scenarios that I'm pretty happy about - but I have no idea how well the shelves will be stocked. I'm planning on doing two transactions:

Transaction #1
3 Dimetapp @ $5 each - $15
2 Reach - $5
Pert 2 in 1 13.5 oz - $4.29
2 Nabisco Vanilla Oreos - $5
Crest ProHealth toothpaste - $3.79
3 Scotch bubble mailers - $1 with weekly ad coupon
Visine .5 oz - $4.99
3 Halls cough drops @ 99-cents each - $2.97 with weekly ad coupon
Total before coupons: $42.04

Coupons: $4.50 Register Rewards, 3 $2 off Dimetapp, 2 $1 off Reach, $2 off Pert, $2 off Visine, 75-cents off Crest, $2 off Visine from Sept. EasySaver, $2.50 off Pert from Oct. EasySaver, Scotch & Hall weekly ad coupons, $5/$20 purchase

Total after coupons: $15.29
I should receive: $10 RR for the Dimetapp (buy 3, get $10 RR), $5 RR for the Reach (buy 2, get $5), $3 RR for the cookies, plus $8.89 in rebates for the Pert and Crest on my gift card

Notes about this transaction: I've read one report that the Reach toothbrushes are ringing up $1.99 and still producing the RR. If that happens, I'll have to grab another bag of Halls to get me over $20 after coupons. Also, the cookie RR is advertised in conjunction with the purchase of a gallon of milk, but apparently you don't have to buy milk to get the RR. The Pert turns into a moneymaker with the manufacturer and October EasySaver coupons (although I don't know if my store will give me overage, I guess I'll find out). I've seen the price for Pert listed at $3.79, but the rebate is up to $4.29, so I'm assuming that will be the price. If you want to use October ES coupons, which are effective starting tomorrow, I recommend printing them because I've personally never been able to get the book at the store during the overlap days. I'm pretty pessimistic about finding the toothbrushes, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I'm also prepared to visit a couple of different stores to try to make it happen.

Transaction #2
L'Oreal Revitalift Anti-Wrinkle Concentrate - $16.49
Crest ProHealth mouthwash - $4.49
2 Vanilla Oreos - $5
Excedrin Express Gels - $3.99
LypSyl or LypMoisturizer - $1.99
2 Halls cough drops - $1.98
Total before coupons: $33.94

Coupons: $10 RR, $3 off Revitalift, Halls weekly ad coupon, $5/$20 purchase

Total after coupons: $15.94
I should receive: $4.50 RR for mouthwash, $3 RR for cookies, plus $24.72 for the Revitalift, Excedrin and LypSyl in rebates on my gift card

Notes about this transaction: A couple of weeks ago (when I forgot my $10 off $40 purchase coupon), the store was out of the Revitalift. I'm hoping that they'll have it back in stock, but my back up plan is to substitute other free-after-rebate items, like the Revlon nail polish and Walgreens antacid tablets. I can always use my $5 RR instead of the $10 one to reach the $20-after-coupon threshold.

Altogether, I hope to spend $31.23 and leave the store with $15.50 in RR and $33.61 in rebates, for a total profit of $17.88. It's like they're paying me to shop!

For more moneymaking or free items, visit Common Sense with Money. In fact, Mercedes's post - which I read after I put together my scenarios - made me realize that I can keep my out of pocket expenses the same but increase my profit if I add the Garnier deal to the second transaction. So I am!

Good luck with your transaction!

The Pert Plus rang up as $3.79 for me earlier this week and I qualified for the rebate. I don't know why it says up to $4.29 if $3.79 is the regular price (maybe other markets are more expensive?).

Hi Cathy!
Is fun putting together this scenarios right? I think I am going to go do one transactions. I already got oreos and halls this week. SO I am going to go for more altoids and free chemistry product for september. My store was out of reach TBs so you may want to prepare for that because I read it's happened to other folks as well.

I think I'm pretty much going to give up on Walgreen's unless it's a really, really good deal. I received the following answer from a store manager for one of our local Walgreen's (we have a bunch of them) today. This does seem to be the policy around here and I see no reason to shop there and use coupons if that invalidates the advertised Register Rewards (second If statement). CVS doesn't do that with coupons and ECBS (yet - don't give them any ideas, right?). Anyway, here's the exact answer (without the beginning and ending paragraphs); sorry this makes this comment so long.

If you are using a register reward coupon for the same item you are trying to get the same register reward on, you will not due to the limit of one per customer.

If you are using a manufacture's coupon (one that does not say Walgreens anywhere on it), and even in the fine print, the coupon says not to be in conjuntion with any other offers; then once again the register reward will not print because the register rewards is considered another offer.

If you are using a coupon that was printed out from our register (looks like a register reward coupon) and it is for the same item that the register reward is on, then it also will not work since, when redeeming a coupon like that, it can not be used in conjuntion with any other offer for the same item that you have that coupon (that has printed out of the register at an earlier date) on.

Finally, the last reason that you wouldn't be able to receive a register reward coupon would be if it is a spend $X get a $Y register reward coupon. With this situation if the subtotal goes below $X after any coupons (whether Walgreens coupons or manufacture's coupon) then you will not get the $Y register rewards coupon since the purchase total falls below the $X before the tax is added. (Also there are sometimes items such as dairy products or tobacco products that are not considered part of these offers, and are usually stated in the fine print of these ads or coupons.)

Wow, what a great job figuring up how to work the transactions to your benefit. I just haven't really figured out the walgreens thing yet. I appreciate how you have outlined it so well though, it actually makes sense to me.

@"Cents"able Momma - I was surprised today, the Pert rang up at $3.49 for me. We'll see if I get the rebate ...

@Mercedes - Yup, it's fun - thanks for the Garnier money-maker!

@Mar - If my store started doing that, I'd only go for the best deals too. The coupon negating RR thing seems to be dependent on the store or district manager, though, so unless you know that all of the stores have the same policy, I'd check around since you mentioned you have a bunch of them. I've found that of the three stores nearest me, one of them is particularly coupon-friendly (or at least the cashier I'm friendly with is), and the Catalina machine always seems to work right (knock on wood). So I try to go there whenever possible.

@Jennifer - You'll get the hang of it in no time. I'm glad you found this helpful - thanks for letting me know, because I'm never quite sure :)
