Chief Family Officer's Third Anniversary Celebration: Giveaway #7 - Oliso Frisper Freshkeeper

I love to cook, and I've found that a vacuum sealer can really speed up my week night dinner-making by allowing me to prep veggies and other foods over the weekend for use later on in the week. For instance, this past week, I cut a head of cauliflower into bite-size florets on Sunday and sealed it up until Friday, when I roasted it and made Roasted Cauliflower and Sardine Pasta.

I want to make cooking easier for you, too. That's why the final giveaway in Chief Family Officer's Third Anniversary Celebration is an Oliso Frisper Freshkeeper ($99 value).

The Frisper Freshkeeper uses a type of zip-top bag, so it's very easy to use. Simply put the food in the bag, seal it up, then vacuum the air out. You can see the Frisper Freshkeeper in action at the Oliso web site.

To enter, just leave a comment with your best kitchen tip. It doesn't have to be about cooking, it just has to be kitchen-related.

For an extra chance to win, subscribe to my feed via RSS or email and leave a separate comment telling me you have done so (or that you're already subscribed).

And for a third chance to win, write about this giveaway on your own site, then leave me a separate comment with a link to your post.
It's important that you leave a separate comment for each type of entry because each comment constitutes one entry.

The giveaway ends at 6:00 p.m. PDT on Saturday, June 14. I'll use Random.org to generate a number that corresponds with the winning comment.

The winner will be announced here on CFO. If I can easily locate the winner's email address, I will also email the winner. The winner will have 48 hours to claim their prize; otherwise a new winner will be randomly selected.

One entry per type per person. Sorry, this giveaway is open to U.S. residents only.

Good luck!

To keep your fridge clean, whenever it gets empty, before you go shopping, wipe down a shelf and rearrange items. If you do this to a shelf a week, cleaning your fridge won't be so much work!

My best kitchen tip is to clean as you are cooking. that way when you are done cooking you are way on your way to having a clean kitchen again. I feel overwhelmed when there's mess around me so cleaning along works great for me.

My kitchen tip really extends to the supermarket. I make a meal plan for the week (mostly dinner, since we eat the same things for breakfast and lunch all the time) and then only shop for the things we need for those meals. It's cut way down on splurge spending as well as wasted food.

Also, it lets me combine ingredients, like having two Mexican meals in a week means we don't waste half a can of chipotle peppers.

Best of all, I can do a ton of prep on Sunday evening and make weeknight dinner a little easier.

When you get home after a grocery trip with meat, marinate them before you place them in the freezer. It will save you more time, energy and electricity than freezing it first then thawing it under the microwave then marinate then freeze again then thaw...

I like to have a home-cooked meal or two on standby. I'll cook up meat loaf or a stroganoff, completely cool the meal, then stick it in the freezer long enough so that when I remove it, I can pop the frozen meal out of its dish in one piece. I wrap the meal up in aluminum and put the aluminum-wrapped meal in a labeled, zipped baggie. When it's time to use a meal, I take it out of the freezer to thaw a bit, unwrap it, pop it back into a serving dish, thaw some more, heat in the microwave and voila!

My kitchen tip:

Keep a large ziplock bag in the freezer and each time you have a little bit of vegetables left-over (like green beans, corn, etc) instead of throwing them away, put them in the bag in the freezer. Keep adding to the bag until it is full then make vegetable soup from all the mixed vegetables in the bag.

Even though I have a spice rack across the kitchen, I keep just a few of my very frequent spices right next to the stove for easy access. So if I decide to add a dash of this or that to my dish, it's just an arm's length away. (Time is of the essence when cooking with a 10 month old.)

Kitchen tip I learned from someone else (can't remember where!):
To sanitize your sponge, wet it until it is wet throughout but not dripping. Put it in a Pyrex bowl or other microwave- and heat-safe bowl, and microwave on high for about 3 minutes. If your microwave is super-strong, maybe don't do it for as long.

My best and newest kitchen related tip is a way to keep your recipes online and organized. I'm using Gmail and its "labels" to keep them online. I've created a special email address just for recipes and am in the process of converting my favorite paper based recipes to emails. Instead of a draw full of printed recipes from my favorite sites, I copy and paste the recipes from the online site to an email and mail it to my recipe email. Then I "label" it appetizer, side, salad etc. Gmail's search functionality makes it a snap to find what I'm looking for and with Gmail for my Blackberry I'll never again have to call my husband to ask what the recipes calls for when I forget to take the recipe with me to the grocery.

Store your Tupperware with the lids on. No, hear me out!!! :-) I know it means you can't nest them, but honestly, I spent way too much time trying to REnest them whenever I needed one. Plus, if you have young kids and you leave the Tupperware lids on for storage, they can pull them out of the cabinets and use them as building blocks - always fun - AND the insides of the containers don't get dirty like if they were stored open. :-)

Before spreading peanut butter on your bread, spray with pam spray helps from sticking. Save a tin can for draining your grease into instead of your sink drain, after it cools throw can and all away.
Hopefully I will win this prize. I had one a long time ago but daughter borrowed to seperate and seal grandsons baby food for travel and daycare. She also used to seal bags of breastmilk for easier travel to hospital when grandson had open heart surgery.
I let her keep mine but catch myself sometimes wanting to use it.
thank you.

Keep your counter tops clean, after cutting meats or veggies!
So many germs live there!

To clean things like grills, keep a supply of old t-shirts cut into rags in the kitchen. Saves money because you don't go through your paper towels as quickly! :)

My favorite tip is to use coupons! Sign up for a website that matches the coupons to the local sales, and then rack up the savings. I've been doing this about a year, and it has saved my family so much money!

Keep healthier options at eye level - ie veggies on the shelves instead of in the drawer. Then you're more likely to choose them!

There are some awesome comments here - both funny and brilliant! I like to chill my onions before cutting them because they don't hurt your eyes as much that way.

My favorite thing to do is chop up onions in one big batch (or peppers or almost any veggie) and flash freeze on a cookie sheet. Transfer to small sandwich type bags and place all the bags in a large freezer bag. Then you only have to mess up the kitchen once and you always have frozen veggies on hand. Boy if I won this giveaway it sure would help w/this! Thanks for such a fun giveaway!

we use a lot of lemons and limes when cooking, and I make sure to leave them out at room temperature for awhile and then roll them on the countertop before squeezing out the juice since you tend to get more juice that way.
