Confession time: I bought non-fair trade chocolate

I want to start this post off with a huge apology to Adrienne, who inspired my non-fair trade chocolate boycott with her revelation that the chocolate industry is sustained by child slavery. After reading Adrienne's post, I vowed to boycott chocolate that wasn't fair trade.

But I broke my vow a couple of weeks ago when I bought some Hershey's chocolates. It happened during my first trip to CVS. I was focused on playing The Drugstore Game, which wasn't going very well, since the store was out of the free-after-ECB-and-coupon razors that I'd come for. I was wandering through the store, trying to figure out something that would make the trip worthwhile, when I chanced upon some Hershey's Pot of Gold boxes for $3.97 and $5 ECBs with a $10 Hershey's purchase. I knew I could use three boxes, so I picked them up, paid for them and went home. It was only when I was drafting The Drugstore Game post that I realized what I'd done.

Since I didn't want to distract from the post, I referred to the chocolates as "candy," but I want to be honest with you here. And especially with Adrienne. And with Plonkee, who was kind enough to join me in boycotting non-fair trade chocolate.

This isn't like dieting, though, where one cookie sends me into a tailspin. In this case, I immediately renewed my commitment and have bought only fair trade chocolate since (in the form of chocolate bars from Trader Joe's). And now that I'm better at The Drugstore Game, I won't make the same mistake again!

Addendum: I realize that my buying some chocolates may seem like a minor point and perhaps not worthy of its own post. But yesterday, Wendy Piersall of eMoms at Home wrote about transparency and honesty in blogging. I had been thinking about how to make my confession, and Wendy's post made me realize that it wasn't so important how I said it, it was important that I just said it at all. So I did.

If it makes you feel better I have to own up to buying a KitKat last Sunday. I needed (exact) change for the bus, and the only thing in the right price bracket was a non fair trade chocolate bar.

Like you, I'm straight back on the wagon. I've ordered Dubble Fairtrade Easter Eggs for my family this year.

Hiya CFO (& plonkee)-

It's taken me a few days to sort out a response.

You ladies rock, and I admire your integrity along with your willingness to participate in the fight against chocolate exploitation of children.

Don't let guilt bog you down; It's corrosive. You have great hearts, and you're taking an uncommon path (aren't they always fraught with difficulty and reward?).

Happy Easter!
