I love shopping online. I can do it when Alex is sleeping, I don't have to leave the house, and usually I manage to save money and/or time. Here's how:
- Shop with companies that offer free shipping or at least charge a low flat-rate fee - The cost of shipping and handling can often negate what is otherwise a good deal. But shipping costs aren't always prohibitive. Amazon.com
offers free shipping on most purchases if your total is over $25, and Bare Necessitites
offers a flat rate shipping fee of $5. In fact, if you're just a couple of bucks shy of free shipping, there's now a website that will search Amazon.com
for a low-cost item to get you to the $25 threshold. Remember to always check the shipping cost before finalizing your purchase, before it's too late.
- Use search engines to find discount codes - A quick search will often yield a promotional, coupon or discount code for free shipping, or a certain percentage or dollar amount off your purchase. Utilizing this method, I've never bought anything from Target.com
that wasn't at least 10% off.
- Sign up for emails from the stores you frequent, and they'll send you their discount codes - Just the other day, I decided to purchase a gift for Marc from a certain store but I really didn't want to pay for shipping. I couldn't find a discount code online so I put off the purchase. A couple of days later, there was an email in my inbox with a code for free shipping.
- Be aware of any deals you get with memberships - For example, my AAA Auto Club membership gives me discounts at various online stores. It also allows me to buy some gift cards at a discount, which is unusual. And the airline with which I have a frequent flyer miles credit card has an online "mall" that credits me extra miles for purchases made with my miles card so long as I enter a store's website through the airline's portal. Unfortunately, I have missed out on some discounts and credits because I have forgotten to enter through the proper portal - so I highly recommend keeping some sort of reminder near your computer so the same thing doesn’t happen to you.
